Hey there, beautiful mamas-to-be! As you prepare for one of the most special moments in your life—your maternity photo session—what you wear can make a huge difference in how you feel and the images we’ll create together.

1. Embrace Your Bump

First and foremost, let’s celebrate that gorgeous baby bump! Look for soft, stretchy fabrics that hug your curves without feeling constricting. Long dresses with empire waists are fantastic because they flow beautifully while emphasizing your silhouette. Or for a relaxed, casual style, choose a form-fitting base layer and then add texture and dimension with a cozy sweater or cardigan.

2. Choose the Right Colors

When it comes to the colors, think soft vs. harsh, while paying attention to what complements your skin tone and coloring. Soft creams, blush pinks, or gentle blues create a serene and dreamy vibe, enhancing the natural light in the studio. If you like more color, then we go with muted tones instead of vibrant hues, bringing your own personality to the styling. Lastly, avoid busy patterns that might distract from the intimacy of the moment; instead, choose subtle prints that add an extra layer of visual interest without taking over completely.

3. Accessorize Thoughtfully

A few well-chosen accessories can really elevate your outfit. Consider delicate or sentimental jewelry, like a simple necklace or a pair of earrings that won’t overpower your look. A floral crown or a soft headband can add a touch of whimsy, perfect for showcasing that maternal glow.

4. Comfort is Key

While it’s tempting to make something that’s “almost perfect” work for you- comfort should be your priority. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, it will shine through in your photos. Choose an outfit that allows you to move freely and comfortably with minimal adjustments. Make sure the neckline, sleeve length, fabric, hemline, and accessories are all to your liking. The last thing you want is to be worrying about errant bra straps or wearing shoes that hurt your feet.

5. Include Your Family

If Dad or the siblings are joining us for the session, then coordinate outfits to complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a color palette using your outfit as inspiration. Pull out one of two colors from your outfit and select coordinating pieces in lighter and darker versions of those tones. Or if both wearing cream or white, use texture to add your contrast. This creates a cohesive look that feels intentional yet relaxed.

6. Plan for Hair and Makeup

Lastly, consider your hair and makeup for the day. Some mamas choose to book a stylist or artist prior to the session while others spend extra time DIY or enlist the help of a friend. Aim for a fresh, natural look that enhances your features without overwhelming them. For your hair, loose waves or a soft updo can create a romantic look that’s perfect for maternity photos. If you prefer straight hair or your natural curls, consider adding a bit of volume at the roots for extra bounce.

I hope these tips help you feel excited and prepared for your maternity session. The most important thing is to be comfortable in your own skin and empowered as you celebrate your pregnancy. Just remember, the most beautiful accessory you can wear is your smile!
