As a newborn photographer, I serve our local Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley communities as well as welcome babies and families from across Alaska. For 14 years I’ve had the honor of meeting families from across our beautiful state. From far north Utqiagvik (Barrow) to Sand Point, from Nome to Kodiak, from Bethel to Seldovia. I serve Alaska as a whole and it’s such a unique privilege of the very unique place we call home.

Many hospitals and clinics in our smaller towns and villages do not have labor and delivery units or are not set up to handle more complicated or high-risk cases, so expecting mothers are often sent to Anchorage to await delivery. This Mama came “all the way” from Cordova a whole month before her little one was due to arrive. We planned for her maternity session to take place just as soon as she got here, just in case the little one decided to come extra early (and before mom got too uncomfy).

She had her heart set on an outdoor session and I wanted something pretty and whimsical for her and big sister. The spot I had in mind offered the coolest backdrop of birch trees and evergreens as well as hundreds of dandelions, ready for all the fairy wishes your heart could desire. First, we went by the studio and had mama pick out a dress from the wardrobe, which is one of the most helpful services that I offer for visiting families. It can be really difficult ordering online remotely and cargo space is often limited, especially if having to also shop for supplies to bring back home. Offering a wardrobe for sessions allows families to avoid that unnecessary stress and enjoy the convenience of perfectly curated outfits for the whole family. Once mama was ready to go, we headed over to the field just a short five minutes away and had the most magical of sessions.

It can often be really difficult to photograph in bright, midday light but that sun was just right to give us the playful, whimsical, etheral vibe we were going for.

After the session, I shared some of my favorite go-to fun spots to help keep big sis entertained for the next few weeks (which deserves a post of its very own). It can be quite the ordeal to be cooped up away from your home and everything familiar, but they both were such troopers and little man finally arrived and we just had his newborn session yesterday. And now they get to finally go HOME!

Safe travels, ya’ll. See you in six months for our milestone session!
