I look at the calendar and can’t believe that we’ve said goodbye to both June and July and are already halfway through August. This summer was so good, so full of great memories and fun times, but boy, it went by quickly! Just like that, we’ve put away the bathing suits and bubbles and have transitioned to our fall routine. We’re now in our 7th year of homeschool (what???), scouts begin next week, and the kids are signed up for ice skating lessons in September. We’re already planning fall portraits and what to wear (I’m really feeling olive this year…)
The thing is, as special as the family portraits are, documenting the day-to-day life is pretty important, too. Last year, as crazy as everything was, I made it my goal to be intentional about the pictures I was taking & sharing on my phone. For me, that came in the form of Chatbooks. It’s a subscription service that compiles your IG, FB, or camera roll pictures into a book that is printed and arrives on your doorstep. I love it! Because it’s attached to my Instagram, it also includes the captions, which has prompted me to actually think about what I’m posting. I choose what images to share and then write down the memories made or the funny story behind the picture.
Instead of just snapshots, it’s the story of our family. It’s our trip to Yellowstone National Park and visiting my bestie for the first time in a decade. It’s days spent berry picking or at the lake. It’s celebrating childhood friendships. It’s chronicling all the ups and downs of our home-building journey. Because I know it’s going to be printed, I take those extra five minutes to write something meaningful and make sure that the image is in focus and has proper lighting (and if it doesn’t, that’s what B&W is for!). The results are books that I love to sit and read, instead of just scrolling.
So print those memories.
Document the big moments as well as the small ones.
Find the beauty in the everyday.
