What does a baby see?

At birth, a baby sees mostly in black & white and shades of gray. Her eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so dim lighting will be her favorite, and she can only see a few inches, so everything and everyone is sort of blurry and blobby.

Within a week, baby’s color vision will start to develop, but bright contrast will still be her favorite. She’ll be able to see 8-10 inches away, the perfect distance to see faces when being held. Baby will start responding to people up close as sound and vision start to come together.

By six weeks, baby can see a full 12 inches away. She’ll start noticing smiles and expressions and respond in kind with gummy smiles of her own. Best of all, she’ll recognize faces and know when Mama is near.

Whether one week old or six weeks old, we’ll document the bond and love shared between mother and baby, even if all she sees is a blurry blob. She knows it’s her Mama. ❤️
